It's really easy to fall into the trap of thinking that more is always better: more words, more action twists, more feelings, more characters, more, more, more... Yet, sometimes the biggest choice we can make is to remind ourselves, “Don’t do that.”
It’s real tempting to lay out every idea that comes to our mind. However, too much shit can overwhelm readers. Here’s where “Don’t do that” comes to play. By being clear and focus, I allow myself to get my point across. I'm able to make my writing clear.
After a hard look at my work. I Cut out sentences or paragraphs that don’t make sense (sometimes a lot of it don't make sense) 😂
This doesn’t mean I'm going to change the way I voice myself; it just means that I'm going to strengthen it.
I Allow myself to not overcrowd my text; I'm able to create a well placed moment and often times, less is more for me. So my story will engage you.
In my world of writing, “Don’t do that” is not an OMFG phrase—it’s a celebration of keeping my writing as simple and purposeful as possible. After all, the beauty of writing often lies not in what we include, but in what we choose to leave out. So the next time you feel the urge to overcomplicate, take a moment and whisper to yourself: “Don’t do that.” Your writing will thank you for it 👉🏾👈🏾
